Brazilian Blowout and other straightening products are used to smooth and straighten hair. They contain a range of carcinogens and endocrine disrupting compounds including formaldehyde. Formaldehyde is known to cause cancer. Studies have demonstrated that exposure to hair straighteners, including Brazilian Blowout, can cause uterine, ovarian and other cancers. Studies have also shown that maternal exposure to hair straighteners during pregnancy and while breastfeeding can cause leukemia in children. This risk is heightened for hair stylists who frequently applied the straightening solution to their client and to their children who were exposed in utero or while breastfeeding.
For many years, Brazilian Blowout marked their product as “Formaldehyde-Free.” In truth, when heated, these products contained formaldehyde in unsafe levels. As a result, individuals may have been exposed to formaldehyde even if they were using a product labeled “Formaldehyde-Free.”
