Bronchiolitis Obliterans

Flavoring-Related Lung Disease, or Bronchiolitis Obliterans

Flavoring-Related lung disease, formally known as popcorn lung or bronchiolitis obliterans, is a bronchiolar airway disorder of the lungs in which the bronchioles are plugged with granulation tissue. Although there are rare causes related to transplant rejection or inhalation of toxic gasses, the disease is most commonly found in workers food and flavor manufacturing factories. It appears to result from airborne Diacetyl, a butter flavoring chemical used in microwave popcorn, cooking oil, candy, potato chips, frozen dough, food spices, and other food products even pet food.

Causes and symptoms of bronchiolitis obliterans

The disease is characterized by fixed airway obstructions, or fibrotic obstruction, visible with spirometry. It is sometimes misdiagnosed as asthma, bronchitis, pneumonia, or emphysema, especially if the only diagnostic test is an x-ray. The illness occurs most frequently in young, non-smoking males. There is no cure except a lung transplant.

Symptoms of bronchiolitis obliterans include:

  • Shortness of breath on exertion
  • Hard to exhale
  • Hard to inhale and fully fill the lung
  • Wheezing
  • Dry cough
  • Irritation of the skin, eyes and respiratory tract
  • Fever
  • Night sweats
  • Weight Loss
